Sand piles are a gravity-affected layered sand block that forms during sandstorms.
Obtaining
Breaking
Breaking sand piles with any tool will drop 1 sand pile item per layer. If a full block of 8 sand piles is broken, a block of sand will drop instead.

Post-Generation
Weather
Sand piles will form on the surface of deserts during a sandstorm. Sandstorms in badlands will form red sand piles instead.
Usage
Sand piles may be placed on any solid block, except for barriers. They may also be placed on honey blocks, soul sand, and mud, despite those blocks not being solid.
If the supporting block below a sand pile is removed, it will be affected by gravity and fall onto the next available block and become a block again. See the falling block page for more details.
